History

It is said that around the year 1000, at the height of Moorish rule in Sicily, a beautiful maiden lived out her days in sweet as well as solitary quiet, devoting her attentions to the lovely care of the plants on her balcony. She was noticed one day by a young man, a Moor. Overcome by a violent passion for it, the young Moor did not hesitate for a moment to declare his love for her. In his heart he harbored a burdensome secret: his wife and children were in fact waiting for him in the East, in that land to which he was now to return. Betrayed by what she believed to be her great love, the maiden planned her revenge. So in the night, while her Moor slept helplessly, she killed him and cut off his head so that her beloved could not only never return to that family, but stay with her forever. She decided that the face of that young man, to her and yet dear to her, should remain at her side forever.

The invention

He created with his head a vase-like object where he placed inside it a basil shoot, a plant linked to divine symbolism and always associated with sacredness. She finally laid her head on her balcony, devoting every day to caring for the basil growing in it. Every day the young woman’s tears bathed the royal plant, which thrived as it grew, becoming more and more flourishing and lush.

The neighbors, pervaded by the scent of basil and watching with envy as the plant vigorously ripened in that particular pot shaped like a Moor’s Head, had terracotta pots made that replicated the same features as the one lovingly guarded by the maiden.

Tradition

Today, every Moorhead that is produced bears a crown, an ever-present element aimed at re-proposing the regal plant that originally embellished the head of the young Moor protagonist of the sad affair
